The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) will deliver the first Global Security Seal in the Americas to Cancun, awarding the top beach destination for adopting its standards to guarantee the hygiene of establishments and protect the health of travelers. The Cancun beaches are the first destination in the Mexican Caribbean and – in fact – the entire American continent – to receive the Global Security Seal to reopen tourism.
This designation will not only allow the popular tourist spot to safely promote its reopening, but it will also bring jobs and foreign currency back into Mexico’s Riviera Maya following the Coronavirus pandemic. The Global Security Seal is a “safe travel stamp” of sorts that also received the full backing of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), along with more than 200 CEOs of major corporations in the worldwide travel and tourism sector.
According to Gloria Guevara Manzo, who serves as the president and CEO of the WTTC, the Seal will give travelers greater confidence in the hygiene and sanitation standards of establishments, including airlines, airports, cruises, hotels, restaurants and other companies that are related to the travel and tourism industry.
“We are very excited, since the first destinations to receive the seal will be Cancun, which is a world-class tourist center, together with Saudi Arabia, which chairs the G20 tourism group, Barcelona, Portugal and Seville;” shared Guevara Manzo. “They are all world-class destinations that have endorsed the seal by implementing safe travel protocols.”
The collaboration between public and private sectors is essential to the success of Global Security Seal efforts worldwide, and all of Cancun has worked very hard to get ready for travelers again. According to the Governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez, Cancun and the rest of the surrounding Mexican Caribbean region have fully embraced the measures provided by the WTTC to protect the health and safety of workers and travelers.
“We appreciate being one of the first destinations to receive this seal of the World Council, in terms of protection and prevention of health,” stated Joaquin Gonzalez. “The state authorities and tourism companies have worked as a team to guarantee the confidence and safety of tourists.”
When Will Cancun Reopen for Tourism?
Starting on June 1, some hotels in Cancun opened internally for staff members to clean and update sanitary security protocols and create sufficiently hygienic conditions. On June 8th, the hotels will be permitted to begin receiving tourists under the WTTC’s new sanitary protocols. Although Governor Joaquin acknowledges that we have not beaten COVID-19, this safe travel stamp is a step toward establishing a “new normal” by establishing smart sanitary precautions that will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
